A 12-year-old boy was killed Saturday evening when a car hit him while he was riding his bicycle, according to the Rockdale and Newton Citizen.

A driver struck Anthony Cruz about 9:30 p.m. as he was riding on Ga. 81 near Lakeside Drive, the newspaper reported. He was declared dead at the scene.

At the time of the incident, Cruz and two other children were on their way home after buying snacks at a gas station, according to a GoFundMe page created after the boy's death. The impact threw Cruz from his bike, the GoFundMe said.

“Anthony Cruz was such an amazing kid who loved being around his family and friends,” the page said. “He was a child who could win your heart over instantly with how loving, hardworking and caring he was.”

The driver involved in the wreck stayed at the scene until investigators arrived, the Citizen reported.

An investigation is ongoing.
