A worker was killed in a weekend incident at a paper mill in South Georgia, officials said.

Tyler Seacrist died Saturday in what Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk called an “industrial accident” at the Packaging Corporation of America mill in Clyattville, the Valdosta Daily Times reported. The mill is about 230 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.

Paulk said the incident started with a jammed conveyer belt.

"They didn't shut off the power," he told the newspaper. Paulk said when the belt started up again, Seacrist was thrown into some industrial equipment and killed immediately.

An autopsy is not expected because of the nature of the incident, the newspaper reported. County coroner Austin Fiveash said he has never had to perform an investigation “of this magnitude.”

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating Seacrist’s death, the Daily Times reported.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
