One person was killed and another was injured in a weekend crash in Athens, according to police.

Willie James Butts, 49, of Athens, died at a hospital after Saturday’s wreck left him with internal injuries, Athens-Clarke County police spokesman Lt. John Radford Jr. said Monday in a statement.

Just before 8:15 p.m., officers were called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash in the 1200 block of U.S. 29 North. According to police, a southbound Nissan Maxima failed to yield to a northbound Kia Sorento while making a U-turn, and the Kia hit the Nissan on the passenger side.

Butts was one of two passengers in the Nissan taken to the hospital with serious injuries. April Campbell, 33, also of Athens, suffered a broken arm and collapsed lung, Radford said. Her condition was unknown Monday.

The driver of the Kia, 61-year-old Phillip Stevenson Dennis, and the driver of the Nissan, 66-year-old Lucy Mae Whitlock, were not injured, according to police. Both drivers are from Athens.
