A man wanted for a probation violation was killed Tuesday when Clayton County sheriff’s deputies burst into his apartment and shots were fired, officials said.

Tory Brown, 22, of Atlanta, died of his injuries at the scene, according to the GBI. The state agency is investigating the shooting at the request of the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the GBI, members of the sheriff’s fugitive unit went to the Chelsea Gardens Apartments on Godby Road about 9:45 p.m. to serve Brown an arrest warrant. They told everyone inside the apartment to come out, and several people did, GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said. Brown remained inside.

“Deputies entered the residence and Brown quickly advanced towards deputies,” Miles said in a news release. “During the incident, a Clayton County Sheriff’s Office deputy shot Brown with his firearm. Brown died on scene as a result of his injuries.”

The GBI said no firearms were found in the home. No officers were injured.

The officer-involved shooting is the 65th the GBI has been asked to investigate in 2021. More than 50% of shootings involving police this year have been fatal, according to the agency’s data.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also tracks officer-involved shootings that don’t involve the GBI, and those numbers sometimes differ from the GBI’s tally.
