Firefighters battled a large blaze Tuesday afternoon at an abandoned apartment complex in southeast Atlanta.

Crews were called to the Forest Cove apartments along Thomasville Boulevard at about 5:15 p.m. regarding the blaze at the two-story dwelling, the fire department said in a news release. Footage showed more than 10 firetrucks at the scene and a massive plume of smoke coming from a building.

A second alarm was eventually issued and additional resources were called to the scene to help extinguish the flames. The fire, which tore apart the front and rear of a building, caused a partial interior collapse and forced crews into a defensive mode, according to officials.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Forest Cove has been abandoned since Sept. 30, when the last resident moved out as part of a relocation process, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Rampant violent crime at the complex was highlighted earlier this year in the AJC series “Dangerous Dwellings” about unsafe and unsanitary apartment complexes in metro Atlanta.
