Metro Atlanta skies are expected to clear just in time for Christmas Eve plans and Santa’s arrival, but are expected to be preceded by periods of showers and storms, some of which could be severe.

Monday night’s temperatures are expected to hold in the mid-40s into the evening hours, and metro Atlanta residents likely will see periods of showers and fog through the night into Tuesday morning, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said.

But the weather could get worse before it gets better, as Nitz said a warm front coming from the south could put metro Atlanta and areas south of it at a high risk for strong and isolated severe storms overnight Tuesday and into Wednesday. Damaging wind gusts and even isolated tornadoes are also possible.

The chance of rain is 100 percent Tuesday and Wednesday, but Nitz said rain clouds should move out of the way heading into Christmas Eve evening.

Afternoon highs will be in the mid-50s Tuesday, low 60s Wednesday and low 50s Thursday, with morning lows in the mid-40s Tuesday, low 50s Wednesday and upper 30s Thursday.
