An arrest has been made in the shooting death of a 19-year-old woman at a MARTA bus stop, DeKalb County police said Friday.

Marcaysia Dawkins, a 2014 Lithonia High School graduate, was killed Sunday while she waited at a bus stop near her home. Dawkins was planning to take the bus to the gym when she was robbed of her purse and a few dollars and fatally shot, according to police. Video surveillance footage from a nearby business captured the shooting.

On Friday, police confirmed an arrest in the case and a murder charge, but decline to release the suspect’s name due to the ongoing investigation, according to Capt. Steven Fore. The DeKalb sheriff’s office fugitive squad located the suspect and took him into custody without incident, Fore said Friday night.

The arrest was announced hours after a memorial service was held for Dawkins. A vigil was planned Friday night at the Fairington Road bus stop where Dawkins was shot.

Dawkins had planned to join the Navy and was getting herself physically fit for the challenge, her family said. In the meantime, she was working a daycare center. Her Facebook photos showed a smiling young woman in a sparkling, light blue strapless gown for the prom.

Her family pleaded publicly for information leading to an arrest in the case.

A press conference is expected to be held Monday, Fore said.
