Doraville police are searching for an armed robbery suspect who managed to elude officers Friday afternoon following a high-speed chase on I-85.
Officers responded to a Wells Fargo in the 5000 block of Buford Highway about 5:30 p.m. after a caller reported seeing a man who robbed them at gunpoint outside the bank last weekend, Doraville police said in a news release. Witnesses told police the suspect, later identified as 26-year-old Darnell Cunningham, returned to the same ATM and appeared to be robbing someone else in the line.
“As officers approached, Cunningham entered his vehicle and fled at a high rate of speed, striking and pinning a responding officer between Cunningham’s and the officer’s vehicle,” police said in the release.
The officer, who was not identified, suffered minor injuries to his hand and was treated at the scene.
Police said they chased Cunningham onto I-85 South and that he eventually lost control and crashed into another car. The Atlanta man reportedly got out of his vehicle and ran, leaving behind a female passenger and a large amount of cash, authorities said.
Cunningham managed to escape, but police believe the money found in his car is connected to previous robberies. It wasn’t immediately clear Saturday if the woman in the car faces any charges.
Anyone who knows Cunningham’s whereabouts or has information about the previous robberies is urged to call Doraville police at 770-455-1000. Tipsters can remain anonymous, and be eligible for a cash reward, by contacting Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta at 404-577-8477, texting information to 274637 or visiting the Crime Stoppers website.
