A DeKalb County inmate facing rape and child molestation charges died Wednesday of an apparent suicide, authorities said.

Marcos Torres-Diaz, 42, of Atlanta was found unresponsive in the jail’s COVID-19 quarantine housing unit on Monday, hours after his arrest, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

“Emergency medical services were rendered immediately by the jail’s medical staff and DeKalb Fire Rescue,” sheriff’s office spokeswoman Cynthia Williams said. “Mr. Torres-Diaz was transported to DeKalb Medical Center, where he died on (Wednesday.)”

Torres-Diaz faced 10 charges, including multiple counts of rape, aggravated sexual battery and aggravated child molestation, authorities said. The charges date back to 2012 and involved minors.

No additional details about the apparent suicide have been released. The incident remains under investigation, and the inmate’s body was turned over to the DeKalb Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
