October 24, 2023 Atlanta: Douglas County Sheriff investigators gathered on North Bear Drive after a Douglas County sheriff’s deputy survived a shooting Wednesday morning, Oct. 25, 2023 but was rushed to the hospital for his injuries, officials said. Few details have been released, but Douglas sheriff’s office spokesman Capt. Trent Wilson confirmed that a deputy had been shot. Sheriff Tim Pounds posted a message of reassurance to the community, acknowledging the shooting near Kings Highway. “The situation is under control and there is no current threat to the community or the nearby school,” Pounds said. The GBI is responding to the scene, where investigators were seen in photos surrounding a pickup truck on North Bear Drive, a residential street off Kings Highway just south of Yeager Middle School, Channel 2 Action News reported. The WSB 24-hour Traffic Center also reported police activity on Bill Arp Road south of I-20. Yeager, Alexander High School and Bill Arp Elementary were all placed on lockdown Wednesday morning, but that has since been lifted, Douglas County Schools spokeswoman Portia Lake told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Video was captured of Douglas sheriff’s deputies and Georgia State Patrol vehicles escorting an ambulance to Grady Memorial Hospital. No further information has been released about the incident. Officials did not say if a suspect had been taken into custody. (John Spink / John.Spink@ajc.com)
October 23, 2023 Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport: Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport has closed its popular South economy lot on Monday, Oct. 23, 2023 for a construction project, removing about 3,000 parking spaces from use next to the domestic terminal. The airport is advising travelers to use park-ride lots as an alternative, including the ATL West deck connected to the terminal via SkyTrain and the ATL Select lot. The airport has said it would add staff to Òaddress public concernsÓ and signs to direct motorists. Other options for travelers include off-airport parking lots that offer shuttle service to the terminal, MARTA, taxis and rideshare services, including Uber and Lyft. Those planning to park at the airport for trips should consider making an advance parking reservation. The airport offers online reservations for its ATL West deck, ATL Select lot and international parking decks. Many off-airport lots also offer parking reservations. The North economy lot is still in use, but was already full by Monday morning when the South economy lot closed, according to the airportÕs website, which lists parking lot status. Even before MondayÕs closure of the South economy lot, airport parking decks and lots often reached capacity during busy periods, forcing motorists to drive around the airport searching for other lots and spaces while rushing to catch their flights. Hartsfield-Jackson is closing the South economy lot to build a new parking deck on the site. The new seven-level deck will have 6,700 parking spaces and updated technology including digital parking space availability indicators and ticketless entry and exit. It will take three years to build, and is part of a decade-long parking construction project that started last year. After the new parking deck is completed on the site of the South economy lot in late 2026, a phased construction project will begin to demolish and reconstruct the existing South and North decks next to the domestic terminal. Those aging decks were originally built in 1980. (John Spink / John.Spink@ajc.com)
October 20, 2023 Atlanta: Neville Francis walks by the standing water along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive near Centennial Olympic Park Drive in downtown Atlanta on Friday, Oct. 20, 2023 as scattered showers and some isolated thunderstorms moved across metro. It’s much-needed moisture. “October is typically our driest month of the year. This year has held true to form,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said. “We are about half an inch or so below average so far for the month of October, and for a month that’s already on the drier side, a little bit of rain helps. A cold front passed over the region, bringing in dryer air with it and setting us up for a “beautiful fall weekend,” Monahan said. On Saturday, temperatures will climb up to the mid 70s with mostly sunny skies. Similar conditions are in store for Sunday, though it might be just a touch cooler with a projected high back in the low 70s. The mild and sunny trend will stick around at least for the first half of next week. (John Spink / John.Spink@ajc.com)
