One last hoorah for 90-degree weather before rain returns to Atlanta

Atlanta is about to break its dry spell; but first, get ready for one last scorcher of an afternoon.
Wednesday’s high is expected to reach at least 91 degrees. That is about 10 degrees above the average for this time of year, according to the National Weather Service.
“It’s hot today, it’s going to be humid, too,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said.
While the projected high is below the 93-degree record for this date, set last year, there is still a 44% chance we could set a new one, the NWS estimates.
The good news?
“The forecast suggests that this will be the last 90-degree day this year in North Georgia,” the Weather Service reports.
There’s also a 30% chance of rain Wednesday as a cold front approaches the region.
“Here’s your warning to find the umbrella,” Monahan said. “A lot of us haven’t needed it at all in the last month or so. We’re about to in parts of the area today, and much more of us tomorrow.”
The rain chance goes up to 80% on Thursday, which will help alleviate some of the drought conditions that have set in across parts of the state.
“We can’t erase the drought all in one heavy downpour,” Monahan said. “But it’s going to go a long way to at least kind of settle things out there, settling the dust and making your ground, your lawn, a little less crispy and crunchy.”
Wednesday’s showers are expected to push in from the northwest, bringing some storms to that corner of the state later this afternoon. By evening, the west metro area could see some storms rolling in.
On Thursday, as the cold front starts to clash with the metro area’s warmer air, lines of showers and storms will start their march over North Georgia, bringing much-needed heavy rain, Monahan said.
Rain chances are expected to linger into Friday and the weekend, too, with a 40% chance on Friday and gradually tapering to 20% by Sunday. We’ll keep a 20% chance into early next week, the forecast predicts.
With all of the rain, temps are expected to return to normal values by Thursday, according to the NWS. The high then is projected at 81 degrees, and it’s expected to remain steady for the foreseeable future.
