A lucky lottery scratch-off player snagged a $2 million ticket at an Athens Publix.

The grocery store sold the winning ticket for the $2 Million Dollar Multiplier scratch-off game to a nearby Statham resident, who claimed the prize Wednesday.

The person’s name has not been released. The Publix is located at 3620 Atlanta Highway in Athens, according to the Georgia Lottery.

A ticket for the game costs $20, and the $2 million pretax prize is the top amount players can win.

Earlier this summer, the multistate Powerball game generated lots of excitement as the jackpot climbed to $1.79 billion before it was won — the second-highest prize since the game was created in 1992. Even though a Georgian didn’t win the grand prize, several have pocketed millions in smaller prizes this year.

Proceeds from scratchers, Mega Millions and other games benefit educational programs in the state, according to the Georgia Lottery.
