Metro Atlanta temperatures are expected to hit the lower 90s for both Thursday and Friday, according to meteorologists. But by the weekend, highs could dip back into the upper 70s.
That’s welcome relief after Atlanta hit 100 degrees on Tuesday.
A heat advisory remains in effect through 8 p.m. Wednesday, after the high temperature reached 92 degrees — hot, indeed, but several degrees cooler than when the city hit 100 degrees for the first time in more than a year.
“I think we’re past the worst of the heat now,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said. “We’re pumping the breaks today.”
But even with lower temps, the humidity kept from feeling drastically different. Wednesday’s heat index — a measure of how hot it feels on your skin — climbed as high as 106 degrees across metro Atlanta. That prompted an extension into the third day of a heat advisory that covers much of the state.
It’s been so hot since Monday that hospitals are seeing an uptick in heat-related illnesses, a Wellstar Health System spokesperson told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. That is typical for this time of year, but if you have to spend any time outdoors, you should stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in a ventilated, shady area.
Thursday and Friday should see highs in the low 90s, according to the National Weather Service.
Some scattered storms are expected both Thursday and Friday, which will bring some relief from the heat. There is a 60% chance or rain both days.
Showers will persist through the weekend, and highs plunge into the 80s starting Saturday as an unseasonable cold front dips over the state. Some locations could even see highs staying in the 70s on Sunday.
