A man is dead after his vehicle left a Cobb County interstate ramp and crashed into a tree line Wednesday morning, police said.

The crash happened after a silver 2006 Lincoln Navigator that was traveling east on I-285 attempted to exit onto I-75 South about 2:10 a.m., Cobb police said in a news release. The car left the ramp, traveled through the grassy area at the Cobb Cloverleaf interchange and eventually collided with several trees, according to authorities.

The man, who has not been identified, was trapped inside the vehicle and pronounced dead, police said. The ramp was shut down overnight while authorities worked the scene.

Police did not say what caused the crash, but roads were wet across metro Atlanta as heavy rain moved through the region overnight. About a half-inch of rain fell at Dobbins Air Reserve Base through the overnight hours, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather was a likely factor in multiple other wrecks reported on Wednesday morning, including another Cobb crash on I-75 South that caused delays near Delk Road at about 7:30 a.m.

The fatal wreck remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Cobb police investigators at 770-499-3987.
