Once a prime area for railway travelers seeking lodging in 19th century Atlanta, the old Mitchell Street area has fallen on hard times.

The Hotel Row area of Mitchell Street in 1970. The City of Atlanta website describes Hotel Row as "a single block of commercial buildings, primarily hotels, originally built to serve the needs of passengers from the main railroad station in Atlanta, Terminal Station. The buildings are the most intact row of typical early 20th century commercial structures which once formed Atlanta's original business district and include Concordia Hall, the Gordon Hotel, the Scoville, the Sylvan and 2 commercial structures." Original caption: "The Terminal district fire of May 8, 1908, left a square block of ruins. It consumed the buildings in the block bounded by Madison Avenue (Spring Street), Mitchell, Nelson and South Forsyth Streets. This picture was taken from the roof of Terminal Station. The Southern Railway Buildings had not yet been built. The Gholstin-Cunningham Spring Bed Company, right rear, across Nelson Street, was a forerunner of the Southern Spring Bed Company. The fire loss amounted to $1,250,000 and a total of 42 firms in 31 buildings were burned out." AJC PHOTO ARCHIVES
