Tornado watch issued for counties north, south of metro Atlanta

May 6, 2022

Tornado watches have been issued for counties both north and south of metro Atlanta, according to the National Weather Service.

A tornado watch was issued around 1:40 p.m. for mountain counties in the upper reaches of North Georgia, including Banks, Dawson, Hall and Lumpkin counties. The advisory is expected to last through Friday evening until 8 p.m.

An separate tornado watch for Middle and South Georgia counties went into effect just before 1 p.m. and is expected to last until 7 p.m. Between the two advisories, Atlanta is effectively sandwiched by tornado watches, though the metro area is expected to face lower risk from severe weather, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said.

Scattered strong and severe thunderstorms are still predicted as the storm system advances.
