Whether crunchy or soft, filled with beef, pork or fish, tacos are now as common on menus as hamburgers are.

Tacos are believed to have been invented by Mexican silver miners in the 18th century. The word “taco” referred to the charges the miners used to excavate the ore.

"These were pieces of paper that they would wrap around gunpowder and insert into the holes they carved in the rock face. When you think about it, a chicken taquito with a good hot sauce is really a lot like a stick of dynamite," Jeffrey M. Pilcher, a history professor, told Smithsonian.com.
