Jason and Vanessa Shapiro’s residence in Dunwoody has a history in the family of 30-plus years.
Jason’s family bought the home in 1979, and when Jason was in college, he shared it with six roommates.
“Right before we got married, we spent about three months house hunting and could never find the right fit for us,” Vanessa said. “We have always loved Dunwoody and have deep roots here. We kept being drawn back to our Dunwoody home. Instead of moving, we decided to renovate and stay here.”
Snapshot
Residents: Jason and Vanessa Shapiro and son Jake, 16 months
Location: Dunwoody
Size: About 2,430 square feet, 4 bedrooms, 4 baths
Year built: 1969
Year bought: 1979
Architectural style: Traditional
Renovations: Changes included raising the kitchen ceiling, adding built-ins to rooms, updating the doors with windows, and removing a wall in the family room to open it up to the breakfast area.
Favorite architectural feature: The foyer. "The colors that we used and the subtle blend of textures makes the space very welcoming," Vanessa said. "The wooden steps and handrailing blends softly with the ash gray and white trim and molding in that room." The couple left the original tile floor from 1969, which Vanessa said adds rustic charm.
Interior design style: Eclectic. "We have mixed a lot of contemporary pieces in the home with prized family heirlooms," Vanessa said.
Favorite design feature: The built-ins they added to the sitting room, family room and theater room. "I love them, they provide extra storage space and cleanly display family photos and other personal items," Vanessa said.
Favorite outdoor feature: The front double doors, which are original to the home. The doors remind the couple of Jason's childhood in the home and his family's history in the residence.
