Love at first sight

Charles and Julie Carmignac decided to add "color and fantasy" to their home in the 14th arrondissement of Paris by filling it with objects that reflected their sense of humor while keeping its original threadbare style of faded ivory stucco walls and worn hardwood floors.

The three-story, 1,600-square-foot home of Charles and Julie Carmignac was built in the 1800s as a haberdashery. They purchased it for around $1.8 million in 2009.

The wood cabinets in the kitchen are remnants from the building's days as a haberdashery, and the portholes near the ceiling were installed to allow cross ventilation.

The Carmignacs kept the faucets on the kitchen sink, which were installed by a former owner who purchased them at a flea market.

The open mezzanine is connected to the living area by a wooden spiral staircase. The Carmignacs liked the look of the bleached wood floors and faded stucco walls and decided not to alter them.

A wood-paneled bathroom on the ground floor, fashioned after a passenger car on the old Orient Express, has a porthole near the toilet that offers a view of the garden.

The master bedroom opens to a terrace and has a skylight that spans the ceiling. It is covered with retractable straw shades.

The lighting at night makes the home look like the fantasy that the owners intended.
