Waterfalls in North Carolina to check out

As spring approaches, it’s a good time to plan some outdoor excursions. For a quick excursion or a week getaway, there are plenty of places in North Carolina to explore.

And, as every hiker and Instagrammer knows, a trip outside is always made better by a waterfall.

Whether you're a seasoned hiker or an eager novice, here are six waterfalls in North Carolina that aren't too far from metro Atlanta.

Upper Whitewater Falls

Distance from Atlanta: 142 miles

This massive waterfall is located inside the Nantahala National Forest, not far from the South Carolina border.

According to BlueRidgeHeritage.com, Upper Whitewater Falls, near Cashiers, North Carolina, drops over 411 feet and is the highest falls east of the Rocky Mountains. Because of the difficult terrain surrounding Whitewater Falls, visitors are urged not venture off the established trails.

Panthertown Valley

Distance from Atlanta: 147 miles

Elsewhere within Nantahala National Forest, visitors can see the Schoolhouse Falls along the Panthertown Valley Trail. From the Cold Mountain parking lot, it's about a 2.5-mile round trip hike. Or, you can extend the hike up to the top of Little Green Mountain for a 5-mile hike, according to RomanticAsheville.com.

Green River Gorge

Distance from Atlanta: 183 miles

The Green River Gorge is full of rugged terrain, coves and waterfalls. It's an outdoors-lovers' paradise for walking and biking trails, swimming holes and a new zipline that takes riders soaring over the trees. According to BlueRidgeHeritage.com, the area has some of the most  expansive whitewater rapids in the eastern United States.

Rainbow Falls

Distance from Atlanta: 148 miles

Located inside Gorges State Park, Rainbow Falls is an impressive 150-foot drop. The dog-friendly, moderate trail is about a 3.9-mile loop, according to AshevilleTrails.com. It's also near Whiteside Mountain Trail, which offers views of the mountain's towering cliffs.

High Falls

Distance from Atlanta: 174 miles

Inside DuPont State Park, you'll find High Falls. The 120-foot waterfall washes over a plane of granite. There is a picnic shelter where visitors can view the falls and covered bridge.

Dry Falls

Distance from Atlanta: 133 miles

This short hike makes it perfect for families with youngsters. It’s a moderate .25 mile excursion. The 65-foot waterfall is situated on the Cullasaja River. Walk underneath the falls as it plunges over a rock overhang.
