The kitchen is Kristen Martinez’s favorite room for entertaining and keeping an eye on her kids. She selected Cambria countertops with thick veining and touches of sparkle. Modern elements include the vent hood and chrome Progressive Lighting pendants over the island, which has chairs from Woodstock Furniture Outlet with nailhead trim. The stainless steel appliances, including the oven and microwave combo and the gas stove, are by Whirlpool, while the refrigerator is by LG. Text by Marena Galluccio/Fast Copy News Service. A farmhouse sink purchased on eBay was installed during the renovations in Jackson Pearce's 1950s ranch house in Decatur. "I love that it has clean lines without looking especially modern or sterile," she said. Christopher Oquendo/AJC FILE

The kitchen received a modern update with white cabinetry, a marble island, a farmhouse sink and stainless steel Viking appliances, including the induction cooktop. “The double French oven has split doors on the upper oven, which is a great innovation for easier accessibility,” said homeowner Michael Halwig. A stone fireplace and wood floors give a modern farmhouse feel to the cathedral-like space. "For me, there's something uplifting and freeing about having a high ceiling in the place where you spend most of your time in the house," said Morgan Lindsey.

Elizabeth Farrell said her favorite detail in the home is the custom black iron window, which was inspired by a photo she found in an architecture magazine. The farmhouse sink is from Rohl.

This barn door separates the second bedroom from the dining room in Sy and Nyvette Gray's home in the Gasket Lofts. The wood is painted a mix of grays, letting it blend what would otherwise be a farmhouse style with the modern vintage style in the rest of the loft. Christopher Oquendo/AJC FILE

"Originally I had white shuttered doors covering the laundry area and it was really ugly. I realized the best thing to do would be to create some modern farmhouse doors. I found a picture I liked from a blog and then printed it out for my contractor," said Berger. "They're made of poplar and I love that the natural color of the wood is not uniform and the wood is also thick, keeping any laundry noise to a minimum."

The kitchen of Leah and Todd Matthews home is open and light, with marble counters from IGM and a herringbone backsplash from Traditions in Tile. “It’s definitely one of our favorite places to be. We most nights are having wine with music playing and kids running around,” said Leah. Text by Shannon Dominy. Photo by Reynolds Rogers.

When Leah and Todd Matthews worked with Level Team Contracting and PSB Studio ARCHITECTURE to renovate their home last year, they added an outdoor kitchen area with seating and a fireplace. They like to cook and eat out there, and they often set food out by the fireplace when they entertain. When the weather is nice, they bring their Friday night movies outside, setting up a TV on the mantel and roasting marshmallows. Text by Shannon Dominy. Photo by Reynolds Rogers.

Instead of traditional cabinets and counters, Michael and Jenniffer Marblestone designed a custom free-standing stained wooden cabinet that fits around their appliances and forms a barrier between the kitchen and stairway, without adding another wall. Michael had a similar piece in his childhood home. Text by Shannon Dominy. Photo by Reynolds Rogers.
