The kitchen is Kristen Martinez’s favorite room for entertaining and keeping an eye on her kids. She selected Cambria countertops with thick veining and touches of sparkle. Modern elements include the vent hood and chrome Progressive Lighting pendants over the island, which has chairs from Woodstock Furniture Outlet with nailhead trim. A stone fireplace and wood floors give a modern farmhouse feel to the cathedral-like space. "For me, there's something uplifting and freeing about having a high ceiling in the place where you spend most of your time in the house," said Morgan Lindsey.

Elizabeth Farrell said her favorite detail in the home is the custom black iron window, which was inspired by a photo she found in an architecture magazine. The farmhouse sink is from Rohl.

"Originally I had white shuttered doors covering the laundry area and it was really ugly. I realized the best thing to do would be to create some modern farmhouse doors. I found a picture I liked from a blog and then printed it out for my contractor," said Berger. "They're made of poplar and I love that the natural color of the wood is not uniform and the wood is also thick, keeping any laundry noise to a minimum."

A double-sided fireplace by Heatilator Inc, the black Ferguson tub and the Gridscape shower doors by Coastal Shower Doors create a striking master bathroom in Leah and Todd Matthews’ Atlanta home. When Leah and Todd Matthews worked with Level Team Contracting and PSB Studio ARCHITECTURE to renovate their home last year, they added an outdoor kitchen area with seating and a fireplace. They like to cook and eat out there, and they often set food out by the fireplace when they entertain. Instead of traditional cabinets and counters, Michael and Jenniffer Marblestone designed a custom free-standing stained wooden cabinet that fits around their appliances and forms a barrier between the kitchen and stairway, without adding another wall.
