Separating the foyer and the parlour of Dennis and Susan Cook’s home is an antique French screen and a faux marble column. Susan saw the screen at Dupre’s Antique Market and waited over a year for it to go on sale so that she could find it a perfect spot in their home. Around the sideboard hang pressed botanicals, fern herbariums by Clara Wooten Tally, who the Cooks believe studied in the biology department of Emory University in the 1920s. The Sherrill Sofa in Dennis and Susan Cook’s family room is Dennis’ favorite piece of furniture in the house because it’s so comfortable. Walls painted in Sherwin-Williams Bamboo Shoot give the room a serene feel, while luxurious details like the framed Paragon wall tapestry and drapes, made by Susan, tie the space in with the other rooms in the home. In 2015 a tree fell on Susan and Dennis Cook’s home in the middle of the night. The next day, while a team tried to remove the tree, a crane toppled and fell on the house as well. The resulting damage was apparent in almost every room of the house. The family room fireplace had to be completely rebuilt, and the Cooks took the opportunity to redesign it. Dennis and Susan Cook call one of their guest rooms “The War Room” because that’s where they keep photographs, medals and other mementos from Dennis’ grandfather, who fought in World War I, Dennis’ father, who fought in World War II, and from Dennis’ Civil War collection. The Bible was found in the wall of Dennis’ grandmother’s home after she passed, along with other family treasures, and it’s estimated to be from the 1860s. The compass belonged to his father. On an easel in their home office Susan and Dennis Cook display a sketch that Dennis did of one of their nieces. This space is where they do much of their work, including architectural sketches for clients and sewing. A set of bookcases the couple found on Craigslist hold many treasured pieces, including an arrowhead found by Dennis’ grandmother that is estimated to be around 10,000 years old. The table displays several Native American artifacts, like the pottery that the couple found in the creek in their backyard, which is thought to be 3,000 years old, and Civil War medical tools. One of Susan and Dennis Cook's first updates to their home after they purchased it in 1994 was to turn the small extra closet in their bedroom into a reading nook. In 2004 Susan and Dennis Cook decided to remodel their bathroom, which they’d been living with for 10 years, to make it work better for them.
