The sprawling kitchen in R. Hardy Smith and Terrie Rice's Canton home doubles as a breakfast nook with a wooden table, chairs and bench. Black cabinets line the wall and the doorway to the butler's pantry, and a dramatic white hood hangs over a Thermador range. Christopher Oquendo/AJC FILE

Oversized sliding glass doors open the kitchen to the enclosed porch. Off the kitchen is a pantry where the Ruths keep appliances, such as a microwave and a second freezer. HANDOUT

The large kitchen island is one of Jane McCune’s favorite features in her new English country home in Sandy Springs. The island makes an ideal craft table for the crafting enthusiast, and the custom cabinetry throughout provides storage and hides Sub-Zero and KitchenAid appliances. Appliances by Wolf and Sub-Zero and lighting from RH stand out against the all-white shiplap and brick walls and cupboards, while artwork from Jeff Reed injects a splash of vibrant color. Designed by Atlanta designer Michael C. Morris, this low-country Southern kitchen was in the 2015 Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine’s designer show house in Serenbe. The centerpiece of the kitchen is the honed Pietre Gray marble island counter top, which sits atop custom-stained oak island cabinetry. Other features include: the handmade metallic ceramic back splash, a custom designed vent hood and a polished nickel bridge faucet. Courtesy of Galina Coada & Bell Custom Cabinetry

In this Country Club of the South home with interior design by E.A. Star Interiors, a sitting room, kitchen and wet bar pack a great deal of functionality into one beautiful space.

Under-cabinet lighting highlights different areas of the kitchen based on where the homeowners are cooking or preparing their meals. When all of the lights are on, it creates a modern spotlight effect that contrasts with the almost-rustic barn door style of the pantry. Text by Lori Johnston and Kelsey E. Open shelves in the renovated kitchen are made from reclaimed wood that Chris salvaged from a Kentucky barn. She topped the shelves with paintings by Anne Bohne and Lindsay Cowles. Custom brushed metal pendants from Ironware over the kitchen island complement the room’s open and airy design. At the other end of the main floor, the kitchen includes a cherry counter on one of the two islands and antique-look custom cabinets by Cabinet Design. The tile backsplash behind the stove was modeled on an old French design. The copper sinks are ornamented by rustic brass fixtures.

The kitchen's modern appliances blend in nicely with the brick accents and rustic decor found throughout the rest of the home.

Homeowner Joel Silverman made the open shelving in the kitchen from rafters salvaged from the house when he and his wife Rachel Silverman decided to renovate and add a second floor this year. The sign high on the wall is a replica, created by artist Rick Baldwin, of a menu that the couple saw on a trip to Mexico. Text by Shannon Dominy. Photo by Reynolds Rogers.

Instead of traditional cabinets and counters, Michael and Jenniffer Marblestone designed a custom free-standing stained wooden cabinet that fits around their appliances and forms a barrier between the kitchen and stairway, without adding another wall. Michael had a similar piece in his childhood home. Text by Shannon Dominy. Photo by Reynolds Rogers.
