The living room of Helene Ross and Eric Connolly’s house sports a new Monessen natural gas fireplace with the original brick from the 1921 house. Much of the furniture throughout the home was sourced secondhand or salvaged, like the RH sofa that was salvaged from a smoke-damaged home or the Crate & Barrel chair that Connolly purchased from ReStore. The veranda of Martha and Jean-Francois Morizur’s home looks out over their backyard and pool area. A sofa, chair and coffee table from Wayfair provide seating around the outdoor fireplace, and the fleur-de-lis wood and iron art above the fireplace from Hobby Lobby ties the outdoor decor into the French style of the interior of the home. The study is awash in gray, from the grasscloth wallpaper to the painted trim and millwork and the upholstery. The Lindseys wanted a sitting area that didn’t have a TV, so they designed a cozy fireplace area. The fireplace uses tumbled Texas white limestone and the swivel chairs are from West Elm. “The fireplace is literally the heart of the house,” said Morgan Lindsey. Chris and Linda Clark have filled their home with art that tells a story and reminds them of special people and places. The silk rug hanging over their fireplace, for instance, was a souvenir from a trip the couple made to China, while the portrait of a young girl over the living room sideboard was passed down from Chris' mother.

When Brad Resler found the nailhead-trim chairs on clearance at Ballard Design years ago, he snatched them up. Today, the chairs are nestled around a tin-covered table shaped like a log in his Grant Park living room. The fireplace is original to the home and is even missing some tiles, which Resler said he likes. “I don’t like things really perfect. I like it to show some age and some use,” he said.
