Flashback Photos: More 1946, 75 years ago in Georgia

A couple of unusual pets found themselves in the headlines in 1946 here in Georgia, but it was also the year a terrible fire ripped through downtown Atlanta's Winecoff Hotel. See what else was happening in our state 75 years ago with our second gallery of photos from 1946.

Arnold Hardy's photo from the Winecoff Hotel fire on Dec. 7, 1946, won a Pulitzer Prize. The photo shows a woman falling from an upper floor of the hotel. The woman survived and was later identified as Daisy McCumber. Hardy was a Georgia Tech graduate student when he took the photo and later turned down a job offer from the Associated Press. The girl who's stolen Georgia Tech's heart in 1946. She's a little wire-haired terrier named 'Sideways,' because that's the way she walks. And if you don't believe she's the official girl friend, just look at her tag...it reads 'Sideways, Georgia Tech.' She likes to follow the crowd and she's often treated to a milkshake at the College Inn by her friends.

This 1946 photograph of Sideways, the famous campus dog of Georgia Tech, was etched on a marble monument on the northwest side of the Administration Building.

The largest crowd of the day follows Herman Keiser of Akron, Ohio, and Sam Snead during the third round of play in the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta on April 6, 1946. Keiser, with a total of 208, held a five stroke lead as the tournament went into the final round.
