Flashback Photos: Intersections of Atlanta, 1900-1998, Part 2

Atlanta is a city that loves its automobiles, and that's nothing new. Our roads have always been a lifeline, though an often slow and unpleasant one. Long before there was MARTA, the city's streets were the only way to get from one place to another. From Smyrna to Sandy Springs, and from downtown to Buckhead, let's take a ride down some of Atlanta's streets as the were from 1900-1998.

The first horsecar line in Atlanta once ran here down Whitehall Street. This is the corner of Whitehall and Hunter Streets in August 1952 (currently Peachtree Street and MLK JR. Drive).

This is the triangular lot in Buckhead that was donated for a park (it would become Charlie Loudermilk Park), bounded by Peachtree Road (right) and Roswell Road and Sardis Way, probably in the late 1960s.

This is the intersection of Euclid and Moreland avenues at Little Five Points on Aug. 23, 1978.

A car turns left at the intersection of Carnegie Way and Spring Street on Sept. 7, 1950. A traffic jam has resulted because of fire hoses blocking Spring St. one block further north. This scene of Spring Street is looking south toward Marietta Street.
