Flashback Photos: Athens and the University of Georgia, 1900-2001

Athens is home to the University of Georgia. This venerable Southern city's greatest exports are music and football, or at the very least, its most beloved. Let's take a look at the home of the Bulldogs as it was in the 20th century.

Sanford Stadium gets a new look in 1963. The main entrance to the stadium is spanned by a huge new bridge, which connects the Franklin and South Campuses, and also will help expedite traffic at football games.

This is the main computer room of the University of Georgia in 1968.

The new home of the University of Georgia's president on March 17, 1949. After 147 years the University of Georgia has a home for its presidents. The famous old Hill-White house on Prince Ave. was presented to the college by the Bradley Foundation, of Columbus, as a memorial to the late W. C. and Sarah H. Bradley. Of Greek revival design it was once the home of Benjamin H. Hill, United States senator.

The new UGA giant on the hill is the biological sciences building overlook the campus track, as seen in 1961.

Home of Martha Lumpkin, the woman Atlanta was once named for (Marthasville). Located on the grounds of the new state agricultural college. The grounds for the college were given by the Lumpkin family with the agreement the house was never to be taken down.

It's a lot easier than it used to be to get from the University of Georgia's main campus to Ag Hill. As this 1963 photo shows, the new route is across the bridge at the west end of Sanford Stadium.
