Flashback Photos

Election drama isn't a recent development. See the case of Georgia's 5th Congressional District race in 1946, in which the victor received fewer votes than the losing incumbent. The Ford Motor Company plant in Hapeville and the Southern Bell Telephone Company building were going up in 1946, too. That was also the year of the Moore's Ford lynching, the notorious killing of two African American couples. No one was ever held accountable for their deaths.

The original Dwarf House, located on North Central Avenue in Hapeville, opened its doors for business in 1946. It gave rise to Truett Cathy's successful 330-plus restaurant chain.

This nine-story office and garage building at Forsyth and Luckie Streets was sold to The Peachtree Investment, Inc., for over $750,000 in 1946. This photo was taken on Oct. 1 of that year. Note the Rialto near the bottom of the photo, which, unlike this building, still stands.
