Georgia Theatre, which was gutted by fire nearly two years ago in downtown Athens, will reopen in August, possibly sooner, according to the landmark venue's owner.
Will Greene told The Athens Banner-Herald "come hell or high water" the theater at Clayton and Lumpkin streets will be open by Aug. 1.
Georgia Theatre has featured bands such acts as R.E.M., the B-52s, the Ramones, B.B. King and Tom Waits on its stage. About all that was left of the structure after the June fire was its art deco façade.
The cause of the blaze remains mystery.
The indie rock band The Glands will be the first to perform when the theater opens, Greene told the Banner-Herald.
