Rayshard Brooks case: Officers won't be prosecuted in shooting death

Photos: After more than two years, the two Atlanta police officers involved in the death of Rayshard Brooks learned their fate.

Pete Skandalakis, executive director of the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia, is the special prosecutor overseeing the criminal case against Atlanta police officers Garrett Rolfe and Devin Brosnan in the shooting death of Rayshard Brooks. Skandalakis announced Tuesday afternoon that he would not pursue charges against the officers.

Former Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter was contracted by special prosecutor Pete Skandalakis to help him review the case. "Based on the facts and circumstances confronting Officer Rolfe and Officer Brosnan in this case, it is my conclusion the use of deadly force was objectively reasonable and that they did not act with criminal intent," Porter said in the Aug. 23 press conference.

Porter said it’s his finding the Rolfe and Brosnan acted in according with Georgia law, the Atlanta police department. He said he believes the use of deadly force was objectively reasonable.

In a statement released during the prosecution team’s news conference, the Atlanta Police Department said both Rolfe and Brosnan were still employed by the agency and are both on administrative duty.
