SunTrust makes new United Way pledge, partnership

Aug 3, 2011

SunTrust Banks was named Wednesday as a United Way Global Corporate Leadership partner for its financial and volunteer support of the international charity.

Atlanta-based SunTrust, the state’s largest bank by deposits, also announced a new contribution of $2.88 million from the SunTrust Foundation. Last year, SunTrust donated $8.4 million to United Way International, including more than $4 million from its employees.

SunTrust workers donated more than 100,000 volunteer hours in 2010 to charities, including the United Way, and is on pace for 125,000 hours this year.

Global Corporate Leadership partners consist of Fortune 500 firms. The designation comes with defined annual giving and volunteerism goals that SunTrust President and CEO William Rogers said the bank clears “by multiples.”

Rogers said SunTrust's employees and foundation upped its annual contributions to United Way throughout the financial crisis, and hopes to do so again this year.

“We’re people who believe in serving the community and we understand when the chips are down we will stand up,” he said.
