Southwest Airlines announced new flights from Greenville, S.C., starting March 13, giving residents of the eastern metro area their closest access to the airline’s service -- at least until it completes its buyout of AirTran Airways and enters the Atlanta market.

Southwest also plans new flights from Charleston S.C. It will fly from Greenville-Spartanburg to Baltimore/Washington, Chicago Midway, Nashville, Houston Hobby and Orlando. It will serve the same cities from Charleston, with the exception of Orlando.

The airline announced a two-day fare sale running through Thursday evening on its website for the new routes with fares starting at $30 each way.

Southwest does not plan to target the Atlanta market for flights from Greenville, and all of those cities are currently served from Atlanta by either AirTran or Delta or both. But spokesman Chris Mainz said “certainly we wouldn’t be surprised to see some (Atlanta) traffic.”

“We’ve seen some of that Atlanta traffic drive over and fly out of Birmingham,” he said, referring to the Alabama city that has long been Southwest’s closest destination to Atlanta.
