A new solar power plant is planned for Taylor County, and it will supply electricity to three cooperatives, including Cobb Electric Membership Corp.

Southern Power, a subsidiary of Atlanta-based Southern Co., said the plant, on 911 acres, is expected to be operational by the fourth quarter in 2016. The plant, a 131-megawatt photovoltaic solar project, will produce enough electricity to supply more than 21,000 homes.

Cobb EMC, under a 25-year agreement, has a contract for 101 megawatts, the lion’s share of the electricity. The EMC serves more than 175,000 residential and commercial customers.

Flint Energies and Sawnee EMC each have contracts for 15 megawatts.

Southern Power is in partnership with Ted Turner’s Turner Renewable Energy to acquire and build solar power plants. Southern Power has acquired seven with Turner so far and one facility with First Solar, the contractor that will build the plant in Taylor County.
