Newell Rubbermaid has added a former Wal-Mart executive to its board.

Ignacio Perez Lizaur, who helped lead Wal-Mart's expansion to Latin America, has joined the board of the Sandy Springs-based consumer goods company. His addition brings the number of board members back up to 12.

Perez Lizaur headed Wal-Mart's first international venture when he worked as the director general of Sam's Club Mexico. He led Wal-Mart operations in Argentina, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Puerto Rico . Perez Lizaur worked for Wal-Mart for 26 years, including as the executive vice president of operations for Sam's Club, a role he retired from in 2010.

Before joining Wal-Mart, Perez Lizaur worked as the general director of employment in Mexico's Ministry of Labor and as an economist in the Ministry of the Budget.

In a statement, Newell Rubbermaid president and CEO Michael Polk said Perez Lizaur's appointment will bring a global retail perspective to the company's board that "will be invaluable to us as we expand our footprint into these high-growth" countries.
