Housing starts for single family homes nationwide increased 3.2 percent in May, the Mortgage Bankers Association reported Tuesday.

Multi-family starts, which had surged in recently, were down from 236,000 units in April to 179,000 in May.

The number of new building permits issued, a strong indicator of future construction, were up 4 percent for single family homes in May.
