Metro Atlanta aims to ‘wow’ highway drivers

Your commute is about to get more interesting. Lots of metro Atlanta communities are rolling out fancy designs on highway bridges, including sweeping arches, funky alternating colored lighting and decorative fencing.

Communities from Gwinnett and Midtown to Cobb and south Fulton are hoping to brand their areas and perk up economic development. That’s a lot to ask of a highway overpass.

The most boldly overachieving may be what Peachtree Corners is considering. An early design option includes towering sword-like points jutting up at angles.

“You want people to go, ‘Wow!, that is a cool place to live and to be,’” Mayor Mike Mason said.
