Shoppers in Marietta and Suwanee will be able to opt-in to texted discounts at two area shopping centers using technology that notices if they are nearby, but does not use their GPS.

The technology, called a geo-fence, will text shoppers at Towne Center Prado in Marietta and Johns Creek Town Center in Suwanee when they enter a pre-determined virtual space around the centers. Both shopping centers are owned by DDR, which is using the technology at 25 other shopping centers in 15 other cities.

DDR said the technology brings shoppers to the stores who are nearby, but may not have thought to come in.

Customers can activate the technology by texting “valutext” to 25787 or going to valutext.com.
