Harley-Davidson is recalling more than 300,000 motorcycles due to problems with the rear brake light switch.

In a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Milwaukee-based manufacturer said the rear brake light switch may be exposed to excessive heat from the exhaust system, causing the light to fail to activate, to activate when the brake isn't applied and possibly a brake fluid leak.

The company said customers will be notified beginning around Oct. 31 and that dealers will fix the problem free of charge.

The recall involves 2009-2012 Touring, CVO Touring and Trike vehicles.
