Google puts ‘Fiber Academy’ in Atlanta

Google said Wednesday it is opening a center near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport where it will train workers how to install its planned Google Fiber gigabit internet service.

The “Google Fiber Academy” includes home mock-ups where vendors can learn how to wire a house for Google Fiber use by as many as six televisions, as well as other devices.

Google said it expects thousands of workers to cycle through 8-day sessions. It did not say how many permanent employees the center will have.

Google didn’t disclose any new details of plans for gigabit service in metro Atlanta, where it has chosen nine cities for the service. They include Atlanta, Brookhaven, Avondale Estates, College Park, Decatur, East Point, Hapeville, Sandy Springs and Smyrna.

Gigabit service is markedly faster than most internet connections now used by consumers. AT&T and Comcast also have announced plans for 1-or 2-gigabit service in metro Atlanta.
