Emory Healthcare is in a joint venture with a Pennsylvania-based acute care and rehabilitation services provider that will expand its patient reach.

In the deal with Select Medical, 23 outpatient clinics in metro Atlanta that had operated as Select Physical Therapy have been renamed Emory Rehabilitation Outpatient Center in Partnership with Select Physical Therapy. Select Medical will manage the clinics, but staffers will become Emory employees.

Also under the deal, Emory’s Center for Rehabilitation Medicine, which provides inpatient and outpatient services after stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury and amputation, has been renamed Emory Rehabilitation Hospital in Partnership with Select Medical.

Emory will be the majority owner and Select Medical will provide management services for the hospital on Clifton Road.

In a third piece of the partnership, Select Medical will become majority owner and manage three long-term acute care hospitals in the Atlanta area. Included are long-term acute care services at Emory Wesley Woods Hospital, which now will operate as Select Specialty Hospital - Northeast Atlanta.

The other two long-term acute care hospitals included in the joint venture are Select Specialty Hospital – Atlanta and Regency Hospital in East Point.

Select Medical and Emory have collaborated on post-acute care since 2000, when Select Medical began leasing space from Emory University Hospital Midtown for its long-term acute care hospital.
