Delta baggage handlers a step closer to unionization election
Ramp workers at Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines are a step closer to a union representation election, the International Association of Machinists union said.
The union said the National Mediation Board has confirmed that the merged Delta-Northwest is a single carrier for the purposes for labor representation among its combined 14,000 ramp workers, who handle baggage. The move begins a 14-day period for the union to submit enough election request cards to show interest from 35 percent of eligible workers.
Ramp workers from Northwest are unionized, while those from Delta are non-union. The two carriers merged in 2008. Workers will vote on whether to be represented by unions.
The Mediation Board made a similar single carrier determination last week for the flight attendants at Delta.
