Baggage handlers at Delta Air Lines will finish voting Thursday on whether to unionize -- the second big union vote at Delta in a month.
If they vote yes, the baggage workers would be the first large group to unionize at the airline. The vote is part of a series of elections this year to resolve labor issues from the 2008 merger of mostly non-union Delta and mostly-unionized Northwest Airlines.
Baggage handlers from Northwest are represented by the International Association of Machinists, while those from Delta are non-union. The election is to determine whether all 14,000 baggage handlers will organize under the IAM or whether they will all be non-union.
Earlier this month, flight attendants at Delta voted down a union, with about 51 percent of votes cast against unionization. However, the Association of Flight Attendants said it will seek a revote.
Also voting on whether to unionize are Delta customer service agents and stock clerks, whose elections finish later this month and next month.
The Delta baggage handlers have been voting since Oct. 14 by website or by telephone, and the election period ends this afternoon. Check back at ajc.com later today to see the results.
