Coca-Cola Co. said Monday its PlantBottle packaging had begun arriving on store shelves in certain markets. The company says it hopes to make 2 billion of the special bottles by the end of 2010.
PlantBottle is a recyclable plastic bottle that’s partially made from plant material. The announcement came as Coca-Cola executives hosted analysts and media at a conference in Atlanta to outline their vision for the company.
The bottle contains up to 30 percent plant products, the company has said.
PlantBottle has been rolled out in Denmark for Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Light and Coca-Cola Zero in 500-mL and 2-liter sizes, the Atlanta-based beverage firm said in a press release.
A variety of products, including Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fresca and Dasani water, will be in western Canada in PlantBottle beginning in December and will be sold during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games.
Starting in January, it will be used in select Western U.S. markets, including Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles, for carbonated soft-drink brands and Dasani in several sizes.
PlantBottle uses sugar cane and molasses as a component. Coca-Cola hopes to eventually use other non-food, plant-based waste, such as wood chips or wheat stalks.
