Job growth in metro Atlanta has been outpacing the nation's – could it be because we've been getting good grades?

Not in the sit in class and study hard, sense. More in the make-the-region-a-good-place-for-business sense.

In a national survey of entrepreneurs and professionals released this week by a San Francisco-based online networking and referral site, a series of cities were ranked on business friendliness.

Atlanta received a grade of A.

Nearly 80 cities in 35 states were graded by more than 12,000 small business owners for the fifth yearly survey by Thumbtack.

Among the professionals participating were: “electricians, music teachers, wedding planners (and) wellness professionals,” Thumbtack said.

The survey went into greater depth on five major metros. Atlanta scored highest, with praise especially for tax rates, health and safety regulations and government's online presence.

Atlanta even outdid Austin, which earned an A minus.

Boston got a B. Minneapolis a B minus.

Thumbtack, backed by some heavy hitters in venture capital, says its users number more than 230,000 professionals generating more than $1 billion in annual business. The company is based in San Francisco, which is one of the cities examined in depth on this year's Thumbtack survey.

As it happens, San Francisco got an F.
