Atlanta Gas Light reviews natural gas fueling station requests

The City of Atlanta and seven commercial operators are working with Atlanta Gas Light to build as many as nine compressed natural gas fueling stations in metro Atlanta, Macon, Savannah and Valdosta.

AGL said it received qualified proposals from those eight entities. They now have 90 days to finalize contracts with fleet customers so the minimum annual purchase requirement at each station can be met, AGL said. Private investors have to ensure to AGL that they will have 30,000 gallons of natural gas -- about 30 percent of the annual capacity for a typical station -- under contract in the first year.

AGL, the state's largest natural gas company, wants to build five to 10 stations in metro Atlanta and then add more statewide. The company is using roughly $12 million of a public universal service fund to encourage private investors to build CNG fueling stations.

The first stations could be open by the middle of 2013, AGL said.
