The third quarter was good for operators of Atlanta-area restaurants.

Sales were up 5.6 percent in the quarter compared to the same period in 2012, says Robert Wagner, president of NetFinancials, which offers tax and accounting services for the industry.

The reason: “Robust Atlanta-area visitor traffic, local population growth and positive metro economic trends,” Wagner said. In addition, consumers are more optimistic on the economy, leading to increased spending at restaurants, he said.

Wagner surveyed 87 independently operated, non-franchise metro Atlanta restaurants for the data, including fast-casual, casual and fine-dining eateries. Total sales for quarter was $50.76 million.

The third quarter sales growth followed a 2.4 percent first quarter 2013 increase and a 4.2 percent second quarter 2013 upward bump compared to the same periods in 2012
