American Airlines is restarting its flights from Atlanta to New York’s LaGuardia Airport, a key market out of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

American discontinued the route in April when it cut back flights at LaGuardia. The cutbacks were due to American selling some of its flying rights at LaGuardia as part of the divestitures required in its merger with US Airways.

Now, however, American plans to reinstate the service to meet demand, with a spokeswoman calling the Atlanta-LaGuardia route “a really important market, especially for our business travelers.”

The American flights are set to resume Jan. 6 with four daily flights on regional jets.

New York is the largest market served out of Hartsfield-Jackson for local traffic, with carriers offering service to LaGuardia as well as New York’s John F. Kennedy and Newark Liberty airports.

The Atlanta-New York market has recently seen a hike in air fares, with average fares up nearly 24 percent in the first quarter of this year to $245 from $198 a year earlier, according to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics. That’s the most recent data available. Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines is the largest carrier in the market.

American also operates flights from Atlanta to Dallas, Miami, Chicago, Charlotte, Philadelphia and Phoenix.
