Snow in metro Atlanta: FAA orders ground stop at airport

The FAA has ordered a ground stop at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport until 4:30 p.m. because of snow and ice, according to the agency's website .

Check with your airline for arrival and departure delays.

A ground stop means flights destined for Atlanta are held at their departure point until the period is over. It allows the FAA to control air traffic volume or to temporarily stop traffic.

Snow is already falling in some of the 50 counties under a winter storm warning through 10 a.m. Thursday. Gov. Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency for disaster preparedness starting at 2 p.m. Forecasters warn that the system could bring accumulations from around 2 inches in metro Atlanta to upwards of 6 inches in the mountain counties.
