Tennis: Second round pairings, state playoff update
Teams in each of the classifications completed their first round matches and will have until Thursday, April 26 to set the stage for the state quarterfinals. Here’s a quick run down of what we saw in the first round and which second round matches have already been played, along with a complete second round schedule.
In Class AAAAAAAA, all eight region champs advanced to the second round on the girls side, but the boys saw Region 7 sweep Region 8 and send No. 4 seed Lakeside-DeKalb into the second round with a 5-0 win over Region 8 champion Grayson. Region 7 filled all four semifinal slots in both the boys and girls Class AAAAAA playoffs a year ago, and is off to another strong start on both sides with a clean sweep of Region 8 in the first round.
All top seeds survived the first round in Class AAAAA and Class AAAA on the girls side. Region 5 swept Region 6 in the boys Class AAAA bracket (Cartersville 3, NW Whitfield 0; LaGrange 5, LaFayette 0; Cedartown 3, Gilmer 1; Chapel Hill 4, Heritage-Catoosa 0).
In Class AAA, Region 2 swept Region 1 in the first round and has already advanced No. 2 seed Pierce County and No. 3 seed Appling County into the quarterfinals. The Brantley County girls defeated Westside-Macon this weekend to become the first team AAA school to punch its tickets into the quarterfinals.
Region 5 swept Region 6 on both the boys and girls brackets in Class AA and half the Elite 8 is already set in both Class A-Public brackets.
